Port Charlotte, specifically

The frame is usually newer than the screen on it.

Ian came ashore on 28 September 2022 as a Category 4, and Charlotte County took the worst of it. The rebuild rush that followed put a lot of cages back up quickly, with whatever mesh was on the truck. Imported screen can go brittle in three to four years; Phifer 18/14 runs eight to ten. If your cage was rebuilt in 2023 and the screen is already chalky or tearing at the spline, that is the reason.

The canal sections behave differently from the inland grid. Gulf Cove, South Gulf Cove, Port Charlotte Beach and Charlotte Harbor sit on brackish water, and there the fasteners and the anchors where the cage meets the deck corrode years ahead of the mesh. Inland, off Kings Highway and around Murdock, frames routinely outlast two rounds of screen.

Charlotte County permits and inspects structural work, and a replacement needs engineered drawings for the wind load at your address. We pull the permit under our own license, CRC1334065, and meet the inspector. Straight rescreening of a sound frame does not need one.

We come down from Sarasota, about an hour on I-75, and we say so plainly. The same crew that measures your cage is the crew that builds it, which is the part that matters more than the address on the truck.

My cage was rebuilt after Ian. Why is the screen already failing?

Almost always the mesh. The rebuild wave of 2023 used whatever screen was available, and imported fiberglass can go brittle in three to four years. Phifer 18/14, woven in Alabama, runs eight to ten.

Ask whoever quotes you which brand goes on your cage, and ask them to write it down. We quote Phifer and install Phifer.

Do you actually work in Port Charlotte, or only Sarasota?

We work the whole of Charlotte County from our shop on Sarasota Center Boulevard, about an hour up I-75. Estimates are free and on site — we do not price a cage over the phone.

Does Charlotte County require a permit for a pool cage?

Yes, for a new enclosure or a structural replacement: a building permit plus engineered drawings showing the cage meets the current wind-load requirement, then an inspection. Rescreening or repainting a sound frame does not.

We pull permits under CRC1334065 and handle the paperwork, including architectural review where the community requires it.

Rescreen or replace, after a storm?

It comes down to the anchors and the uprights, not the screen. If the connections are sound, a rescreen brings the cage back for a fraction of the cost. If the anchors have gone, new mesh on a failing frame is money wasted. We check and tell you which one you have, including when the answer is the cheaper one.

What does it cost?

Panel repairs typically run $150 to $650 and full rescreens $1,200 to $3,500, depending on the size of the cage and the mesh. A new engineered enclosure is a five-figure project. Every number comes from an on-site measurement and arrives as a written, itemized quote.

Projects up to $65,000 can be financed, with up to six payment plans.
